Expanding a practice is a business decision; physicians need to do a detailed analysis of the risk-benefit involved with having a second site. The decision to expand may be based on increased volume beyond capacity at the present location, the addition of new providers and the need to grow the patient base, the desirability of the new location and projected patient volume, and finally any secondary gains from having the additional office.
Likely the most crucial information needed is whether the new location can support the planned growth. Unfortunately, for most locations and practices, this answer is unknown. One really cannot find out how well a new site fits their growth plans until they actually have a presence at that site. The price tag for this expedition can be prohibitive, especially if it does not pay back in the long run.
